Exploring Buenos Aires: San Telmo

February 28, 2010: Christian was sick all week and had to skip Wednesday‘s Spanish class. Finally he went to a doctor on Friday – so we had our first medical experience here in Buenos Aires. It turned out to be a very resistant cold and the doctor prescribed only some easy medicine.

Indeed on Saturday he felt much better already. We went out for a walk to Palermo Viejo which was adjacent to our area. It is an area with low buildings – mostly one or two floors high and quite renovated. It bustled with people. Lots of nice cafes and terraces can be found there. We enjoyed the great weather and had coffee outside on one of the many terraces.

In the evening we were invited to a party at David‘s house. David was from Switzerland and was in Michael‘s Spanish class. He was a fanatic tango dancer and knew all about tango and its history. He made friends with people from various Milongas (tango places) and shared the house with his friend Rea, a girl from Switzerland and as well a tango lover (tanguera). We were about 20 people sitting on the roof terrace of this beautiful old style building with lovely 21 degrees outside. At 2 a.m. two artists did a projection show on the walls of neighbouring houses with great motives. We also got an invitation for an opening of an exhibition in a gallery for the Saturday ahead. Unfortunately we had no camera with us.

Charming San Telmo – the oldest neighborhood of Buenos Aires

On Sunday we went to San Telmo – the cultural and artisan centre of Buenos Aires. It is the oldest neighborhood of the city full of charming old buildings. It was the first industrial area of the city. During the 20th century it became a bohemian area and attracted many artists. Today it is bustling with cultural activities.

On Sundays it is very busy with tourists as it holds a market on that day. In the evenings you can find lots of milongas and also small theatres. Our friend Bibiana organized her cousin to show us around as she was very knowledgeable about the place around San Telmo.

All in all it was a quiet week with a few walks in the city, nice lunch on terraces and a lot of sleep for Christian. The Spanish classes were fun and it was great to have met fun people! And a nice weekend with some great activities!

Things to do in San Telmo

  1. Visit the street market on Sundays.
  2. See tango in one of the local milongas.
  3. Check out the antique stores in the neighborhood (we nearly bought an old harp there).
  4. Do a leisure stroll through the charming streets and have a drink on one of the many terraces.
